Gregathon

It’s Sport Relief soon, well not actually soon but we’re already being bombarded with it.

Greg James is doing a ‘Gregathlon’ completing five triathlons in five days in five UK cities. It sounds exciting, depending on what the distances are of course but naturally the completely useless BBC fails to mention whether it’s 50 metres of each or a full Ironman every day. This matters.

After considerable digging through numerous websites I find he’s swam 2.2 miles, biked 112.6 miles and ran 27.8 miles over three days. So he’s roughly done an Ironman over three days, not bad. Seemingly the outdoor swims are killing him, well it is February.

I run from work and then get the bus home from Borrowash. Then when I get home L heads off out for hers before we watch something called the Secret Life of Bees on DVD. Not really my thing.

Infestation

L’s Ironwoman friend says she can see that L has an Ironman in her. L fell about laughing at that comment but once she’s got that Vitruvian under her belt in 2017, who knows...

Meanwhile her lowly half-ironman other half heads off for a 'small' watt bike session. Only small because I have a race on Sunday you know. I have to fight my way through a sea of mortar boards to get there, there’s been a right infestation of them across Pride Park all week. They’ve been holding the Graduation Ceremonies inside the velodrome.

Which is so not the place for it. Inside graduation frocks and sweaty gym kit mingle uneasily together. Not a great combo. I tried my hardest not to drip on anyone but unfortunately I think I inadvertently photobombed several once in a lifetime souvenir photos.

Holiday Fatigue

It turns out that one of the guys in my meeting today was a former Ironman and marathon runner, although he has now been forcibly retired by his doctor who has advised him not to run any more. His wife has since passworded their computer so he can’t enter any more events.

The other chap had a running history or rather his father was famous for taking a ten mile short cut in the London Marathon.

I emerge from the meeting and immediately start sounding like L because I’ve not been able to get to the gym. This is even more frustrating when you’ve just lost a day of your five day free gym pass. It was a hugely infuriating meeting anyway as I’d found out all I need to know within half an hour but everyone kept on talking for another three hours. At least I’ve come on the bike today, so have got some training done.

Tennis/squash opponent pulls out of tonight’s game claiming fatigue after his holiday. Honestly, you’re supposed to come back from holiday refreshed and raring to go. It would have had to have been squash anyway as the tennis centre is again closed. This time for a wheelchair tennis tournament.
