Self-Deprecating Humour

L responds to my query about whether she enjoyed herself at the gym on Friday morning by saying she did but she felt less gym bunny and more gym bag. Ha ha. I do love the self-deprecating humour.

In the evening I offer her a run. Yes, with me! Like the old days, a retro one around our old loop. The Derby Road loop circa 1997. She says she's happy to take the dogs. I say I’m happy to not take the dogs...

We go dog free and it seems to go well. Just like the old days we end up in bed afterwards where we finally break open the bottle of Grey Goose from Christmas.

On Saturday we head over and do Leamington parkrun. L’s done it a few times but it’s the first time Daughter and I have done it. The off road course isn’t as bad as I feared because the ground is very firm. Afterwards we meet Son and his gf for breakfast in the delightfully named Fat Birds Café.

In the evening we do our second Beer Festival in eight days as we head over to the Derby Beer Festival for a ‘moderate’ session. I do have a sixteen and a half mile run tomorrow but this strategy seemed to work quite well at Prestwold last weekend.

My beers - Brass Castle Saltwater Taffy Brown Bitter 4.5% (N. Yorks), Yeovil Night Train Porter 6.0% (Somerset), Downlands Devils Dyke Porter 5.0% (West Sussex), Double Top Madhouse Porter 5.2% (Notts) and Harbour Puppy Porter 4.6% (Cornwall).

L’s beers - Brass Castle Quench Pale Ale 3.2% (N. Yorks), Black Storm Porter 5.2% (Tyne & Wear) and Brass Castle Saltwater Taffy Brown Bitter 4.5% (N. Yorks).

Snow Envy

Today we head over to see Son and his girlfriend in Leamington Spa, as a sort of a backup plan in case they can’t fit us in over Christmas.

It has snowed impressively in Nottingham this morning but by mid-afternoon a major thaw has set in and the roads to Leamington are fine. However, we have a touch of snow envy when we arrive as they’d had far more than us and they’re hanging onto it.

We have booked the White Horse and it’s a good job we did as they are not accepting any more bookings due to the weather!

After a decent evening with them, L suggests that rather than take them out for a meal next time we challenge them to a game of squash or badminton instead. This may have something to do with the fact that Son’s expanding waistline looks like it could do with a damn good squash match or three.

A Happy Place

L makes a persuasive case for not cycling, the weather is foul. So I go into work on the bus. It is wet but it does stop long enough for my colleague and I to manage a pub lunch.

Leamington Spa has been voted one of the happiest places to live. It’s an interesting choice but not one shared by me. We’ve had numerous trips to visit Son there and clearly happiness is a lack of real pubs and nowhere that sells food on a Sunday. So clearly they have different criteria to me.

The boys and I are dog training tonight while L is going over to Daughter’s for tea. I hope she gets a demonstration of her washing machine, we do have shares in it after all.

A Mere Spectator

Today is Derby 10k day and again I am a mere spectator as L attempts to hobble round it. It’s not one of my favourite events but I would have entered if I’d known for sure that I’d be uninjured but that’s always hard to gauge in advance. L clearly hoped she’s be uninjured but it hasn’t really worked out that way.

So I spectate with the boys and L does ok (for an injured person) but she won’t be happy (even though she’s injured person). It’s a nice touch that they are offering sick bags at the finish this year. I assume they didn't want anyone up-chucking on the pitch or perhaps they were just for the Forest Fans.

Afterwards we pop into see my parents before we head off to Leamington Spa to hand deliver 15,000 Yens to Son for his trip to Japan, if he remembers to get on the plane this time. We have lunch in the White Horse.

Then back in Nottingham we have a night out at the Horse & Jockey in Stapleford.

Mad Friday

Today is apparently 'Mad Friday' the busiest drinking day of the year.

I hope L doesn’t get caught up in that as she goes to visit Son in Leamington for a bit of Christmas shopping. Although her train is late and she is stuck in Derby for over half an hour. I am just about to wander over and take her for lunch when her train finally arrives.

I’m on the bus and then do another run/Watt Bike/run/bus/run session. A fit looking chap gets on the bike next to me, clips his shoes in (he's brought proper cycling shoes) and then powers away at a steady 280-300 Watts. He barely breaks sweat as my body melts onto the floor at my mere 250 Watts. Standards are high here.

Then its home to celebrate ‘Mad Friday’. I cook tonight on the grounds that we best have a meal in for a change.

Ready For Cocoa

Today is the day of Son’s first driving lesson or rather it was meant to be but his driving licence has gone missing. So Leamington gets a reprieve and can breathe a sigh of relief. I’m not sure whether it’s lost, been pinched or (knowing him) simply lying on his bedroom floor.

I bike today and arrive home revved up for my night out with Tom Robinson. Although I’m sure this won’t be a late night, it’s sure to be a 10pm curfew, at the latest. We wouldn't want to keep the old man from his cocoa and not him keep us from ours.

So, on a night when we all expect to be home early for our cocoas support act Kitten Pyramid turns up already in his pyjamas. After a slow melodic acoustic start where he does the dedicating a song to his wife sort of thing, he suddenly changes tact. He ties a naked Action Man to his music stand, invites his son upon stage to play drums then picks up a bass guitar himself and turns into the White Stripes. An intriguing transformation indeed but then he is from Burton on Trent.

Follow that Tom Robinson or should I say the ‘as seen at Glasto’ Tom Robinson. Tom is the latest ‘oldie’ to reform, if you can reform yourself that is and he’s now released his first album in 20 years entitled ‘Only the Now’. It’s an album funded by pledgers on Pledge Music and not surprisingly this album makes up around half of tonight’s set or should we say sets as Tom, now age 65, opts to take a siesta half way through.

The majority of the rest of the set comes from an album 37 years old, 1978’s ‘Power In The Darkness’ and he opens with a couple of old favourites from that record ‘Winter of ’79’ and ‘Too Good to Be True’. These go down very well, as is to be expected, with a mainly but not exclusively older crowd tonight. Then he follows those with a track off the new record, the very appropriate ‘Never Get Old’.

Robinson is, as always, totally engaging on stage. Every song has a back story or a joke behind it. ‘Martin’ has, of course, the whole crowd behind it with everyone yelling the key parts back at him or in the case of Mr Irritating next to me singing every single s***ing word back and he is not in TR’s league vocally.

The first set ends with a blatant plug for the merchandising stand and Tom’s big hit 80s ‘War Baby’ one of two tracks tonight from 1984’s ‘Hope And Glory’ album. His other top 40 hit ‘Atmospherics: Listen to the Radio’ follows later.

The second set starts with ‘Home In The Morning’ off the new album and then a solo track performed by Lee Forsyth Griffiths ‘Meet Me Halfway’.

‘Glad to be Gay’ comes dedicated to George Michael and with yet another lyrical makeover. In fact it appears Robinson was brought a lyric sheet before the song. The memory probably isn’t what it used to be.

One thing that hasn’t changed is his determination to tackle issues that he is passionate about. His new material tonight took on the banks (‘Risky Business’), suicide (‘Don’t Jump Don’t Fall’), legal aid (‘The Mighty Sword Of Justice’ and the Iraq war (‘Merciful God’).

Another thing that hasn’t changed is his ability to belt out the powerful oldies as a double-barrelled finale of ‘Up Against the Wall’ and ‘2-4-6-8 Motorway’ arrives.

There’s time for one more and he returns to play an encore of the title track off his new album. Before the song he harks back to his decades that have passed but was keen to point out that is exactly what they have done. Their time has now passed and now he appreciates more than ever the need to live ‘Only the Now’. Good advice.

I tell L to get my cocoa ready but apparently that'll have to wait, a dog has left a ball by the front door that has my name on it.

Just Not Our Day

I drop L in Leamington from where she is heads off to their parkrun (where else) and then to meet Son for breakfast. I then carry on to the Southam dog show.

There are no clear rounds today as we have a few poles down and miss a few contact points but it was not too bad a performance overall. I think it was just not our day today. Although I wasn’t too happy with his contacts so I take him in the practice ring where they suddenly become brilliant again before reverting to ‘not great’ in our next run.

In the parkrun L is defeated by a beagle but it was probably on drugs. Breakfast went well apparently and she gets a bus over to join us at the show.

We stay in tonight ahead of tomorrow’s 10k.
